Platforms - SOCIAL NETWORKING!
Social networking is now about the biggest thing in a young persons life and now its not only young "technology geeks" that are hooked on a social network site. Its about every person with access to a computer.
Currently the biggest and most used social network site is of course FACEBOOK. These are just some of the many impressive figures facebook has;
- Facebook has more than 500 million active users.
- The average user has 130 friends
- People spend over 700 billion minutes a month on facebook
- More than 30 billion bit of content (web links, news stories, blog posts notes, photo albums etc.) shared each month.
- Every month more than 70% of facebook users engage with platform applications.
- More than one million websites integrate with facebook.
These alone show hoe popular facebook is and how it is an ever growing site. So many different companies are realising how facebook can be easily used to advertise upcoming event and even in our case upcoming radio stations and shows.
Going back to the second statistic, if everyone in a radio company advertise their radio station as a group of facebook that has already reached thousands of people. Getting new people to tune in and engage with the radio show and this can then go further until new, unknown listeners are tuning in.
As this is free this is probably one of the cheapest and also one of the most effective ways to advertise a radio show.
Also the new up and coming TWITTER! Twitter is also for anyone and everyone. It is however a lot simpler than facebook. Like facebook you can create you own profile and have your own picture but twitter is all about posting "tweets". These are almost like status', a short sentence or event that is posted to any followers. Twitters main aim, is to keep people informed, be it something a silly as a traffic jam, that must have dress has gone on sale, or just a pick me up it can be put on twitter and in our case we can post any updates or upcoming things to perspective listeners, clients or anyone we feel like.
Twitter even has a site purely for business on twitter: http://business.twitter.com/twitter101/
I think social network sites would be the best way we could advertise and as well all have at least one acount to a social network site we would be able to advertise are radio shows easily. Every current radio station advertises on facebook and with our audience demographic it seems like the most logical place for us to advertise on too.

Platforms - BBC IPlayer
Radio Platforms Research – Radio on BBC IPlayer
After BBC Iplayer became a big sensation with TV, radio recognised that this could also be a great facility for them. And now lots of stations have their own page on BBC Iplayer and other similar sites. Stations such as; BBC radio 1, 1X, 2, 3, 4, ,5 ,6 ,7, A, BBC World service and BBC Radio Nations and Local operate on BBC Iplayer and can easily be accessed and listened to live or people can catch up with previous shows.
Radio Platforms - Moblie - Apps and Widgets
Researching into different Platforms – Mobile Phones – Radio Apps
Just like many other people over the world now days, I am one of the many lucky Iphone owners. Iphones are excellent as they enable to have so many different apps, capabilities and internet settings and this now stands for practically any new phone on the market. All phones now either have apps or widgets and this was another brilliant invention for many companies including radio stations. Any radio station worth listening to now has their own, generally free, app or widget so it is even easier for people to listen to a particular radio station anywhere. This is great for listening figures and is an ever growing market meaning that it can only really get bigger and more popular.
Not only can you get your local stations but you can also listen to radio stations all across the world, and depending on the station you can choose whether or not to charge people to buy your app or have it as a free app.
Making apps is a really easy thing to do and people make apps every day in some cases end up making millions.
They have also brought a new app out that will connect to 60,000 radio stations. This is something we could look at doing for our radio show. As it isn’t overally expensive and if big enough would reach a wide audience.
Also so not to be souly targeting apple users we could make a widget for other smart phones. These would only have to be simple, having maybe the radio station name and a background as the actual widget and then just having a listen live or some recorded pod casts to listen to when opened.
Most radio apps have a simple interface and are quick and easy to use so anyone can listen in. For Example Kiss radios app has simply the radio station presets , a listen live feature and some links to the internet home page. Also on the app there would be many spaces to advertise parts of the show and up and coming shows and guests.
This would be a good place to advertise and promote our radio show.
