Evaluation

Radio Assignment Evaluation

Tea and Toast Radio Show:

Intro: The Tea and Toast Show was the first radio show we conducted. We wanted to create a show that people our age could enjoy and we wanted to relate it to shows that we like, such as Chris Moyles' radio 1 show or Ferne Cottons Radio show.

Strengths: We played a good selection of music that a wide range of people could enjoy and would want to hear. Our topics were very audience related.

Weaknesses: I think with the feature we could have made more calls so that we could have got a few more funny ones.

Talk about the research you did: Once we had decided what sort of program we wanted to do we researched into similar programs that we could think of, such as Chris Moyles' Show and Ferne Cotton's Show. When conducting the research the things we picked up on that were important to our target audience where, keeping the show informal, chatty and humorous and sticking to current music and topics that fit our target age group.

How does it compare to the shows your researched: Our show compared quite a bit to the shows we researched in the sense that our playlist was music that is in the charts at the moment, as radio one and the above shows also do. Also our feature was quite similar to one of the features on Chris Moyles a while ago. Also we kept the general presenting style quite similar as we had one main presenter/speaker, Sam and we also had two almost quest presenters, myself and Amy. This meant that we could have the general banter and chat and the humorous, not to formal style that the above shows have. Also when talking in links we kept anything we talked about to topics that our audience would like such as shows on tv and muic etc.

Talk about the features used and how they relate to the target audience: For this show I made a feature called, “The Prank Call Feature”. This feature involved calling up people or businesses and trying to get 5 random words into the conversation. To do this feature we had to sit in Sam's car and use his hands free device and a zoom recorder. I think this feature suited our show and target audience quite well as our target age group like making things such as prank calls and I think the humour involved is well received by most people of that age. I tihnk the prank call feature was quite amusing however if I did it again I think we would call more people so that we had a wide variety of calls to choose from and could therefore pick the ones that worked most and were the funniest.

Do you feel the Programme suited the intended audience: I feel our show fitted our target audience quite well as we followed the research we had collected quite thoroughly. When listening to our show we had some funny moments and a good selection of music and we also had some good feedback from some people that fitted our audience profile.

The Encore Show:

Intro: Our second show, we decided to call “The Encore Show”. This show was specifially for children in need so we wanted to do something a bit different. In our group a lot of us have a passion for musicals and Disney, so we decided to do a show specifically about musicals.

Strengths: I feel this show fitted its target audience superbly and the show seemed quite professional and formal. I think our presenter was a very good choice as she can be very clear and formal and had quite a good knowledge of the musicals and I feel our features were very interesting and informative.

Weaknesses: At one point we weren't sure if we had gone off air for a moment but saying we were live for one hour I feel there were not many mistakes and It ran quite well. I think If were were to do this again we could have a few more interesting features that could involve our listeners a bit more as I feel our tea and toast show gave the audience more chances to interact with the show.

Talk about the research you did: When deciding on the type of show we wanted to do we saw that Elaine Paige's radio show was very similar and therefore when putting together our show we researched into Elaine Paige and her style and techniques. We also researched into all of the big shows currently out in the west end and big shows that have previously been in London and other places. We had to research quite a lot into specific shows. We found out plots, where they are being showed and even how long they have been running and if they have big events up. Our show playlist had to be well researched into as well. Obviously all of our songs were from musicals and so we had to pick the songs from musicals that we thought our audience would want to hear most. Once we had selected them we also had to check that they were suitable and had no swearing in them.

How does it compare to the shows your researched: I believe our show is quite similar to the Elaine paige show as in our show we included, music from the shows, musical reviews and general musical chat very similar to the Elaine Paige Show. It also had the same style as the show as we had one singular female presenter who was quite clear and formal all the way through.

Talk about the features used and how they relate to the target audience: For our features in the show we had quite a few musical reviews, these were very relevant to our target audience as if they are listening to the show they will be people that like musicals and these features give a lot more information about new musicals and fit the style of our show as they were quite formal. We also had a feature that was “Life in the day of a musical theatre student”, we felt our target audience would enjoy this as its quite interesting and informative and it gives a bit of background information to how musical theatre stars are made.

Do you feel the Programme suited the intended audience: I think overall the show suited the target audience well as the whole show had a good structure and style, like the Elaine Paige show and I think our target audience would be able to enjoy the chat, music and features very easily.

The Encore Show - Review

This is a review Amy recorded for our show The Encore Show...

The Encore Show - Treatment

The Encore Show Treatment

Format
Live radio show to be broadcast for children in need.

Duration
1 hour

Intended audience
The primary audience for this show would be middle age women as this group of people enjoy watching and going to musicals, on our ‘test run’ we found that the ladies in the zone (ages 45+) really enjoyed the music and we got some very good feedback from them. However our secondary audience would be people of all ages as everyone enjoys musicals in some form of medium. We found that in our rehearsals we had lots of people singing along and dancing to the well known classics.

Style
As the show’s content is very similar to that of Elaine Page’s BBC 2 show we have chosen to make the style very similar too. We are doing that by having mainly music, a female presenter and lots of facts about each different musical. We also have a interview with a ‘actress’ which is also featured on the BBC 2 show.

Rationale
We believe our show is something different, a style that no one else had chosen to use for children in need. It will be a good ‘break’ from all of the current music and conversation. Musicals are for all ages and we play music that everyone appreciates.

Feasibility
We think this radio show is very feasible as there is such a wide audience for it, it is fun and exiting.

Budget
No budget necessary

Deadline
The show goes live on the 17th November

The Encore Show - Script

The Encore Show Script

Good afternoon, my name is Esme, welcome to the encore show on stratcast.co.uk in today’s show we are going to discus and sample some of your favourite musicals. We are going to start our show with a number from the incredible musical mamma mia. Here is the cast’s version of _______________.

You’re listening to the children in need edition of the encore show on stratcast.co.uk. That was from the musical, mamma mia. Musicals have always been popular with any age group and there are more musicals currently showing in the west end than we have time to talk about but there is one show that has astounded its audiences for the past 25 years and last month performed at the O2 arena in London with a incredible cast of over 300 actors and musicians, from les miserables this is Stars.

Welcome back to The Encore Show with me Esme Horne that was Stars from les mis and Electricity from Billy Eliot. The producers of Billy Elliot have recently announced that they are extending there Billy youth theatre scheme into 2011, this scheme gives children a chance to show off their acting skills in their own production of the show which could lead to performing on stage with the cast in London’s west end. Moving away form London, our next song if from the Sound Of Music. Currently touring the UK the sound of music stars the nations Maria, winner of the BBC’s how do you solve a problem like Maria – Connie Fisher.

That was ___________ from the sound of music. You can see the show on tour at the Bristol hippodrome until the 7th December where the tour will move to Oxfords new theatre. Now we are going to move on to a more upbeat musical – something everyone knows. Oliver, hear is ________

This is the Encore show on stratcast.co.uk and that was defying gravity from Wicked. This year wicked celebrates its 5th year in the west end and currently stars Lee Mead, the winner or any dream will do 2007. This next song is from one of my favourite musicals – this is what a feeling from Flashdance.

Chicago was first seen in the west end in 1979 after spending 4 years on Broadway. Our net song is the opening to the show, performed by the character Velma and is possibly the most memorable song from the show. You’ve guessed it. This is the cast of Chicago with All That Jazz.

Welcome back to the encore show on stratcast.co.uk unfortunately we are nearing the end of our show but I am sure we can squeeze a couple more songs in.___________ is from a music that started in 1971 and was later adapted into a film in 1978. Grease started off in Chicago as a non-musical performance called grease lightning. Theatre producer Ken Waissman saw the show and suggested to the writers that the show might work better as a musical so grease was born and stole the stage in Broadway in ’72 and then in the west end in ’73. So here is it. __________.

We have now come to our final number is a well known hit from a 1987 film which was adapted for the stage in 2004. Before we play our final song may I remind you to tune into stratcast.co.uk tomorrow to see Stratford college does children in need live. And stay tuned today for ____________

The Tea and Toast Show - Treatment

Treatment for The Tea and Toast Show

Format
We are going to record this show onto Myriad and also broadcast it on Ustream so there is an online copy available.
Our prank call feature will be recorded onto a Zoom mp3 recorder and edited on Soundtrack Pro.

Duration
The duration of this show will be exactly one hour long. We will be able to do this, as we will rehearse the show before hand and time all the links. Also the scheduler on Myriad will allow us to keep track of the time.

Intended Audience
Our Tea and Toast show is targeting an audience of 16- 24 year olds. The presenting style and the features will therefore appeal to this age group. The show will be broadcasted around college and advertised on facebook and therefore will reach our target audience.

Synopsis
Our show is going to be presented by Sam, Adele and Amy. As the programme is music based the main content of the show will be the music. We have decided to play tracks that are modern and popular.
We have two features for our show. Know Your Lyrics is when one sentence of a song is said and then the contestants have to guess the next lyric. We choose to have the competitors making an animal noise when they want to make a guess, as this will add another humorous element to the game. We decided to get Millie to present this feature as then it’s different voice for the listeners and allows all three presenters to play along and therefore create more of a competition. We chose this feature as it allows the audience to play along. This feature is going to be live, as this will create a better competitive mood.
Our other feature is a prank call one. Adele or Sam are given 5 words that they have to fit into a phone conversation. This feature will be pre-recorded so that it can be edited so that it’s shorter and all content is suitable.
The content of our links will be informal and relaxed with subjects such as what listeners are having for breakfast.

Style
The style of the show will be informal and chatty. As the show has three presenters it will be very conversational with hopefully some humour.

Rationale
We decided to do a show in the style and for this audience, as we believe that, as we fit into the target audience ourselves, we can create an enjoyable show for this audience. If the presenters are enjoying themselves then the audience will realise this and hopefully enjoy the show too.

Feasibility
This show idea is possible as there is an existing audience and they are easy to reach as the show is going to be broadcasted around the college and the students fit into the age group. The show should be easy to make as we

Budget
We will not need a budget for this show, as all the equipment is available from college.

Deadline
22nd October

Public Service Broadcasting

In the UK we have something called PSB, this relates to broadcasting that is for us the public, and not purely for advertising and comercial purposes.

The communications regulator Ofcom, requires that certain television and radio broadcasters fulfil certain requirements as part of their licence to broadcast.

All of the BBC networks can do PSB and also regional channel 3 companies can too.

These mean that the companies don't necessarily get much money for the broadcasts, kind of like what we are currently doing but if we needed money to fund out shows we wouldn't want to do PSB.

Other relevant audience profiles and figures

Whilst looking into audiences for our radio shows i also looked into other radio shows listen figures.

For example:

BBC Radio 1:
- 1.9 average hours per head
- Reach percent = 29
- Average hours per listener = 8.9
- Total hours = 95,729

Classic FM:
- 0.7 average hours per head
- Reach percent = 11
- Average hours per listener - 0.6
- Total Hours = 37,288

As you can see these are two very different shows and the general feeling over the rajar figures is that the younger shows generally have better figures. Meaning that maybe our Tea and Toast Show will be better.

Primary Research - Questionnaire Results - Audience Research

These are the results for our questionnaires:

https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AuV5hqutqbp8dElic0haWFJ3cmVfaml2UXBYcDBXVEE&hl=en&authkey=CKCLi74F

That is the link to our table of results.

From these results you can reach many conclusions about our target audience and the public in general.
For example...

We found out that most of the people questioned listen to the radio for the music, therefore when we are targeting a young audience for our tea and toast show, we want to make sure the music is up to date and current.

This almost shows that for our show, the encore show, we are likely to have a smaller audience but as the show is so specialised we really need to get the right music to hook the musical fans.

Also we asked...

We asked people which station they listened to most and these were the results we got. Again the most popular ones are the ones with a younger target audience and the shows with things like chart shows. this is quite promising for our Tea and Toast show however there are also people listening to shows such as radio 2,4 and heart etc. These people tended to be older age groups which is what we expected and hope to target these people with our show The Encore, as well as a few others.

However this is dramatically affected by the age groups questioned.

As you can see there were not many people over the age of 25 that were interviewed, and more older people perhaps should have been.

As you can see from this people dont listen to radio for that many hours, not as much as they would watch TV say. These hours are more likely to be at breakfast and rush hour times etc.

We also asked if people preferred listening to a team of presenters or a single person and with the results we have decided to have 3 presenters for our Tea and Toast Show. We also think it fits in quite well with our style of show as more people adds more chat, humour and an informal style.

We asked people how they listened to the radio. The most popular answer was fm radio, supporting our theory that the most popular time people are listening to the radio is in the car, i.e on the way to work. Also though it showed that people like to listen to the radio on the internet and internet and mobile communication is growing and it would probably be a good idea for us to look at getting onto the internet.

This is the amount of people we questions that had ever interacted with a radio show, through any form of media. As you can see it isnt many, so we figured the more ways we give the listeners to interact with us the more likely they will be to get in touch.

Finally we asked people if there was anything they disliked about radio, as you can see most people were quite content with it but we did notice people that were unhappy didn't like the adverts. Luckily for us that doesn't really affect us in this project but when producing a radio show that needs funding and there for adverts, how many, how often and which adverts you play, can play a big part on your listeners over all experience.

3 Radio Show Analysis

Show: Fearne Cotton
Time: 11.30 – 11.45
Presenter: Fearne Cotton
Songs played: Tim Berg – love you seek, Celo Green – Forget You, Lissie  - Everywhere i go, jay- z – young forever
Topics: The Inbetweeners, talking about upcoming shows, MTV Punked, new and upcoming singer
Lots of music, sound beds and sound effects, not much talking in between.
Radio 1 is a very busy and diverse radio show especially the Fearne Cotton show. When analysing the show it was clear that the show had quite a young target audience, around 15 – 40 year olds. We could tell this from the type of music played. For example most of the music is, or has recently been in the charts and other music is new and upcoming artists. This narrows the target audience down as not all 40+ year olds keep up with the current music. The style of the show is also quite fast and upbeat to suit the target audience. For example the mode of address is very informal and conversational and her tone of voice and use of phrases is very suited to young people, almost as if she is interacting with the young audience directly. There are many examples of this throughout the show as she shares her opinions on different tv shows and music and refers to relevant media in a conversational and enjoyable way, rather than just informing the audience.
Throughout the show a number of soundbeds and sound effects are used. These are used when advertising upcoming shows and explaining what is next on the station. The idents used are very loud and lively making them sound fun and entertaining for the listener.
The show focus’ mostly on the music having 4 songs, (roughly 12 minutes of music) in just over 15 minutes. The gaps for talking in between the tracks were short  and informal and Fearne mentioned things such as, the other nights episode of the Inbetweeners, the revival of the MTV show “Punk’d” and a new and upcoming singer, all of which are things that the target audience want to know about. This was proved be how many people were texting in, in response showing that the show has a big following and how the generation targeted are all willing to text in to the show.
Pitch: I would say for a lady Ferne Cotton has quite a low pitched voice but this pitch is very easy to hear on the ears and is a calming yet young voice that her target audience can relate to.

Projection: Her voice is very clear and has the perfect levels in sync with the music and sound beds etc.

Pace: Her pace seems like a normal and easy to grasp pace to the listeners however when she gets excited about a new band or song etc, her pace can speed up making it sound more fun and exciting. The pitch also changes with this and i feel this is the best way to build excitement and also attract listeners.
Show: BBC World Service – The Strand
Time: 9.30 - 10am
Presenter: Mark Coles and Harriet Gilbert
Songs Played: None
Topics: Current events, important new stories, architecture, lots of interviews.

Short news style ident. Preseters say a point at a time and don’t talk over eachother. Quite depressing news stories. The style of the show is very formal and indirect to the listeners. Her pitch its quite low but her projection is good, making her voice seem suited to what is being told but also easy to listen to and understand. There is no music or any other idents and the show is pretty much all filmed out on the streets, the only background noise the show has is the ambience of the people around them and the traffic noise. This is quite effective as it shows where the information is coming from and is almost more visual for the viewer as they are able to think of where the interview is being held, however i do not feel this would appeal to a young audience as it is quite boring, therefor if we were to use this type of style then it would be more suited to our "Encore show".

The way the show is presented, idents and soundbeds would not be appropriate as there is so much information being given and the two together would be too much for the reader to take in. That is something that we would need to consider when we do our shows.

The presenters take a lot of short pauses as so much information is being explained small pauses are needed so that the reader can keep up and understand what is going on.

As i said earlier this show is more like the style of our show "The Encore Show" and wouldn't really fit at all with our show "The Tea and Toast Show". I would say the target audience of this show is an older audience, late 30's +, purely because of the presenters mode of address, information being given, the topics, the age of presenter and how she is talking to the listeners. Therefore we can take some of the style and ideas from this show and incorporate it into our show.

Show: Classical Fm

Time: 9:00am - 1:00pm

Presenter: Anne - Marie Manhall

Songs Played:

Topics: Early music memories, disney films and musicals,

Short simple ident to start the show, giving basic times for important shows. She interviews Florence Welch about her early music likes and her biggest influences. Talking about which musicals have influenced our lives would be something good to do on the show. The gues compared to the presenter has quite a timid quiet voice and would obviously have to have been turned up on the levels, however the presenter has a perfect pitch and projection. Her pitch and tone shows and level of interest in the guest and what she has to say which makes us as listeners feel more interested. Therefore our presenter need to be really cheerful and interested in the show else our listeners wont be. Also her projection is good as her voice is a right level and all of her words are clear and easy for all ages to relate to and understand.

The show itself has no music or idents after the start and it consists just of the conversation between the two people, again suggesting that more formal shows should have less going on and maybe not a soundbed.

Pitch: The pitch is considerably lower in the more classically based programmes. I feel this is a code and convention of these style shows, as they generally are slower, calmer and need a low, soothing tone of voice.

Projection: The projection pretty much stays the same throughout the show, keeping to the same low sound, so that it can be easily listened to in any circumstance and will not startle and older listeners.

Pace: The pace, as statued earlier, stays slow and almost boring to certain listeners.

Pause: There are an appropriate number of pauses in the speech so that the audience and listeners can listen easily but i do not feel that these are for anything such as dramatic effect.

Conclusion:

All of these shows are very different, Ferne Cotton's show for example is more like our Tea and Toast Show, whereas the others are closer to our show The Encore. As the above shows have done, it is important to cater our show to our target audience, right down to the presenter, effects used, topics and playlist.
